I'm quite sure all of you realize the importance of reading and the major role it plays in your child's education. To help foster a love of reading and build on the skills your son/daughter have already acquired is one of our main goals for the year. In order to meet this goal, your help is required. The research numbers on home reading are mind blowing. Just a few extra minutes a night make all of the difference when we look at things like vocabulary/ word decoding and ultimately ease of comprehension.
We don't have access to a home reading program in grade three but we do have an ever growing classroom and school library. We also have access to RAZ kids. They have a wonderful online selection of books that the students can either read themselves or listen to. The benefit of RAZ kids is the quiz that follows the book. We have access to the results and can intervene if a problem is realized.
We ask that your son/daughter reads for 20 minutes every night. The students should be using the rule of five and reading good fit books. If you feel that your son/daughter needs more resources to carry out their home reading every night please let us know and we will work something out.
I have attached the RAZ kids link below. The teacher username is chusebya. The students will need to click on their username(first initial of first name and then last name) and enter in their password. The password is "fhv" and it is the same for everyone. I have also attached a link to the research regarding the benefits of home reading. Lastly, the video shown below talks about the importance of reading and why it is so crucially important.
